Spray Foam insulation can be a Scam

Picture it, you’re in the market looking to buy a new home and something had happened requiring you to get new walls. Something like a random drunk driver crashing into your house because that’s what drunk drivers do, mistake your house for their Brand New Parking space for a quick nap as they’re casually doing 45mph in a school zone at 3pm- Because Day Drinking is the new blood sport in this economy.

And you think to yourself, well, I want some really good, cheap, insulation, what’s the best thing out there?

And you do some research and somehow conclude that Spray foam insulation is fast and easier, and you think you’ll get that. It’s not really cheaper but you found something that’ll change your mind.

Mainly because you saw a Facebook Market place post about some guy going around and doing it under the table (which means cheap for you) in your local Poker Club chat. Your group used the Facebook chat, because the Signal and Telegram had too many Feds, so your group opted into the Facebook one’s where the Feds can see you guys but they don’t join and start soliciting dumb acts of kidnapping governors.

See, this Spray Foam Guy, let’s call him Jim, took a few courses and youtube lessons and decided to provide a service to the world for money. Mainly, he’s in it for the money. Figure he goes makes the mix and sprays your home in a rural area, he’s got a fair lion’s share of a small market. Chances are, he’s not up to code, and that means you get along with him because He too is anti-government. So on the bright side, it’s under the table and it’s cheap(er).

A few days to months later, you have sinus problems and breathing problems and you even have annoying headaches. You just don’t know what it is, because it happened out of nowhere and is negatively impacting your health. So you assume its a million other things that happened recently.

But chances are, It’s the spray foam insulation.

Spray foam insulation CAN be a scam.

Spray foam insulation, also known as spray polyurethane foam (SPF), is a liquid insulation material that’s sprayed onto surfaces to insulate and seal gaps and cracks. This is a mixture of two liquids, but sometimes people use other liquids or improperly make the mixture.

If installed improperly, then this shit may leak into your living spaces and cause a slew of side effects that also affect your neurology. Think Asbestos but more modern and more fume-y microplastics invading your brain. I’ve now substituted hard ground breaking journalism from my desk, with the powers of AI to draw my yellow journalistic conclusions;

And chances are, the Spray foam uses Isocynates;

Don’t worry, that spray foam install that took three or so days, could win you a LIFETIME of FREE lung problems.

Off gassing

Just as a side note, most manufacturers recommend 24 to 48 hours before living in your freshly sprayed domicile to off gas. So you’ll have to sleep on the couch at a friend’s place, camp outside, or find a hotel room- and chances are, all of those locations probably have hidden cameras to spy on you anyway. But don’t worry, some of the spray foam is off gassing in smaller amounts long after 48 hours.

To be a little more realistic, everything offgasses. Even Concrete and fresh coats of paint. So chances are, you’re already poisoning yourself with ‘new’ construction homes built with materials funded by regulatory captured zoning commissions. It’s great, don’t you love it all?

And on a deeper level than offgassing, which is often a physical or chemical issue. Everything decays, everything rots, we live in a destitute world of decay. Every element and particle has a half-life before it all crumbles into star dust from whence we came.

So, like Off gassing is just a natural part of the universe, but that doesn’t mean it’s healthy for you.

Damages;

Spray foam installed improperly can also cause cavities, or holes or pits, that can allow moisture to accumulate and cause Dry or Wet rot depending on conditions. So you could very well be damaging the structural beams of your home, or also be getting a nice dose of Mold with your plastic to breath in.

Removal costs

Oh, and the cost to remove spray foam, depending on the structural damages, you might be able to just remove some of the spray foam (virtually can’t remove it all), or you might have to tear down everything and get new walls and structural beams. So the cost can vary between a few hundred/thousands of dollar to tens of thousands+ in costs.

It’s also difficult to modify spray foam to get better sealant. Something about plastic not wanting to bond with plastic that’s a few days older or some shit. Idk, science. So you’ll probably have to remove the old stuff if you want new stuff.

If you spray more spray foam on spray foam, you might cause more pockets or cavities which might be bad for your house.

That’s a real saving, lemme tell ya.

Post notes;

Honestly, in an Ideal world, we wouldn’t use Fiber Glass or Spray Foam insulation, we’d probably use Wool from Sheep, mud, or myco-blocks. Myco-blocks are essentially processed bricks made of fungal necromass, it’s actually very temperature resilient.

But I’m not here to upsell you on a Solar Punk Future, I’m already living in the Cyber Punk one.

In Closing

TLDR: It’s petrochemicals with off gassing that can cause dry rot, which makes it more expensive. And it’s removal is shit, and expensive. Often times the regulations are shit. And it’s bad for the environment, as well as your health. -And regulations and health studies don’t really understand it’s impacts, which means it’s probably poisoning your future health, probably wouldn’t recommend babies breathing it.

I’m a Yellow Cake Journalist, I paint shitty opinions and disguise them as opinionated facts.

Spray Foam insulation CAN be a scam, and it can affect your health in a negative way poisoning you over time. Vet out who ever is doing it, and make sure they got insurance. At least you can trade your future lifetime lung problems for some chump change if things go south.

Be careful what you bargain for, and there’s no safe bet in anything you do. Whether you get spray foam insulation or lead paint in the walls or your plumbing and call it ‘old school plumbing’. Whatever you decide to do, there will be inherent risks involved.

On the bright side, if you home goes up in flames, you get to add extra pollution to the world. Nice.

All in all, the ‘fast way’ to build homes is just out of cheap shitty wood and a bunch of plastics, bad for the environment, and aren’t built to last. Oh, you’ll have to pay a pretty petty due to housing market inflation to build a new home.

Don’t worry, there’s plenty of homeless people out there, so you get to make your choices in life. I get it, this is just how society funneled us through Fast Food, Fast Furniture, Fast Fashion, and even Fast Homes. Everything is Fast and Shitty, God Bless. All of it is designed to not last longer than a Mountain’s Shadow, good old planned obsolescence.

I’m sure if World War 3 doesn’t happen, Anthropologists are gonna have a field day in how we ‘poisoned’ ourselves throughout time.

But what can you do, in this economy? (You can always end sentences with ‘in this economy.’ – try it some times.)
