Recycling Arbitrage is apparently Fraud

So taking cans worth 10 cents from one state and depositing it across the border for a 25 cent return apparently is fraud. That arbitrage is against the law, which law? Idk, I didn’t read.

From Jul 27, 2023

So a 7.6 million dollar business of exchanging cans for a higher recycling rate is apparently illegal.

I mean, I didn’t know that was illegal, it’s not like there are blatant laws and information being pushed out.

You know what’s also illegal? Smuggling cigarettes from cheaper states to NYC or some other hell hole with high taxes.

Yea, apparently that’s illegal.

Something to do about state imports, exports, excise tax, and other shit.

So now recycling across states is illegal, and so is trading cigarettes under the table to beat tax rates too.

I mean, if it were up to me, that bottle deposit sounds mighty dumb. Seeing as the bottling companies aren’t the ones paying that tax, they just push it down to the consumer. A la you.

I can’t say in good faith that removing the bottle deposit is a good idea, because a lot of people homeless and otherwise are looking for bottles and cans for opportunities to make an honest living.

So, now that we’ve opened pandora’s bottle deposit box, it seems like we can’t close it.

Also, apparently, recycling in California requires an ID.

So that sounds hella stupid as fuck. It seems almost incentivized to throw that shit in the streets.

You think everyone wants to have an ID? Let alone be required to be ID? That’s more of government push for you.

Proponents of this idea for ID is to prevent the arbitrage above, but obviously it doesn’t.

Why leave your bottles that you paid deposit on for the trash company, that you pay to take your recycling, to deposit your money and get your money?

So what, are you gonna give the government more information and ID for recycling the shit you already don’t want?

Sounds like a bunch of hoops that don’t make a lot of sense.

Unless of course you wanted to punish the homeless population. Furthering the proof that California doesn’t care about homeless. Seems like California government believes that No Lives Matter.

Hey,

I just started looking into Cal Recycle. And it looks like a huge scam.

So I guess the potential scammers don’t like being scammed.

It’s not clear to me that CalRecycle is an actual branch of California government made by positive law and facilitated by execution and legislation.

And CalRecycle outsources it’s direct duties and execution to a bunch of private companies and transfer stations as sub contractors under the guise of government.

It just sounds like there’s a lot of room to run a racket and RICO scheme to launder money through recycling.

That’s just a guess, I’m sure someone else out there can do the sleuthing and come out with some interesting finds.

All I know is that (a good chunk of) California is a cesspool of corruption by blinded people and tax heavy handed people.

Yea, the type of people to close down all restaurants except their personal vineyards because ‘reasons’.

In Closing

Yea, didn’t know this was illegal, kinda sounds smart both ways, to do and to stop, but also sounds like taking advantage of the system.

Turns out, taxes paid for to the state from the bottle tax, doesn’t transfer from other states. So if you buy some shit in say Michigan, the taxes go to Michigan to be refunded or rebated to you IN Michigan. But if you buy shit in Indiana, then you don’t pay the bottle tax, and if you collect the rebate in Michigan, then technically you’re getting a rebate from a tax you didn’t pay for. So, yea.

If it makes you feel any better, California DMV was caught several times selling private user information to third party companies.

So, don’t feel bad for California, good old Scamifornia. In case that’s what you were feeling.

Whatever toots, I’m off to do nothing once more.
